Switch to a Career in Government

Newcareer

Thinking about switching careers? With today’s challenging economy and the renewed focus on job security, government careers offer some of the best, most stable jobs available in America. With an estimated need for 2 million government employees by 2016, government agencies are not experiencing the hiring freezes that are bottlenecking other sectors of the work force. Government work is an extremely rewarding career which allows you to actively serve your country while you earn money.

While a career in government work is highly desirable, many people still have concerns if a career change is right for them.

Some things to consider:

Am I too old to switch careers?
Regardless of your age, it is never too late to switch careers. If you have been in one industry for a substantial period of time, remember this: most employers and educators highly value experience and professionalism, things many younger applicants don’t have. Use this to your advantage.

What if I have already earned a degree in a field other than government?
Many schools offer accelerated programs to help you earn an advanced degree. These programs are designed specifically for students who already hold an Associate or Bachelors degree in a different field of study, and normally last 12 to 18 months. If the degree you currently hold doesn’t seem especially connected with government work, remember that you already qualify for a large number of administrative jobs with a degree in any academic major.

Can I earn my degree while working full time?
Yes. Many schools offer part time programs. You can also set your own schedule by earning your degree online. Online degrees are valued just as highly as campus degrees in the government sector.
